We hear often about the dangers of texting and driving. But, have you heard about the danger of texting and walking? Texting and walking accounts for more injuries than those sustained from texting and driving, though texting and driving injuries remain more serious.
According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, approximately 4,000 people die in truck accidents every year. 100,000 more suffer injuries as a result of these accidents. A recent CNBC article put the crisis into perspective. The kinds of injuries Americans suffer every year as a result of the trucking industry is comparable to the kind of damages that would be caused if a major jet crashed every single week for a whole year. There would certainly be a large American outcry against the aviation industry if airplane crashes were in the news every day. Yet, truck accident injuries and deaths are accepted as if they were inevitable.
While drivers often hear about the serious consequences of driving while distracted, experiencing the effects first-hand often means tragedy, personal injury, and sorrow for everyone involved. Yet, AT&T has recently released a texting and driving simulator that teen drivers and others can download. The simulator offers individuals the firsthand experience of the serious consequences of texting and driving.
In one YouTube video, everything seems ordinary. The driver trails a white car on the highway and, for a while, it could be just any other day on the road. Then, out of nowhere, an object flies in through the window, sending a spider’s web of splinters across the glass. Road debris doesn’t need to fly in through the windshield to be deadly. Debris in the road can put motorcyclists and other drivers in danger. According to the Globe and Mail, road debris can lead to blown tires. When this happens, a driver is at risk of losing control of his or her car.
