An OSHA Investigation Has Been Launched Into A Pacific Steel & Recycling Employee’s Death
Last week, emergency personnel were called to the scene of a forklift accident. When they arrived, they found the body of 51-year-old Todd L. Wolf pinned under an overturned forklift. Wolf and two of his coworkers were at a residence to pick up electronics equipment and furniture.
They brought a forklift on a trailer to help move the heavier items. The two coworkers were inside the house, starting to move the items, when Wolf began to unload the forklift from the trailer. As he drove the vehicle off of the trailer, it tipped and crushed him.
Police believe that he died instantly, and the coroner’s report lists the cause of death as blunt force trauma. Pacific Steel declined to comment about the accident to reporters.
According to the Idaho Statesman, the police usually work with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) after an industrial accident results in a death. OSHA investigators were on the scene shortly after the police, and they plan to speak with Wolf’s coworkers and his employer.
The goal of an OSHA investigation is to determine if the accident could have been prevented through better training or equipment maintenance. In most cases, the investigation doesn’t turn up any violations, and the issue is dropped. However, if the employer is found to have acted negligently, they can face penalties and could be sued by the employee’s family for wrongful death.
An OSHA representative said that their job is not to lay blame, but to make sure that employers maintain a safe workplace.
